CHARITY PROGRAM Overview
The GEMS Charity Program is a chance to bring together our members and the wider community to contribute towards great causes locally, nationally and internationally. All charities and foundations are close to our hearts and hold the core values of the GEMS community. After a very successful 2014 for GEMS’ charity endeavours with the Red Cross Blood Drive, Zonta International Birthing Kit Assembly and the Do it in a Dress (DIIAD) Campaign, we aim to continue and expand these established events in 2015.
Last year, two Blood Drives were held with some generous donors in Semester 1 and 2 collectively saving 120 lives with QUT GEMS. A full day was also dedicated during Semester 2 for a Birthing Kit Assembly event in collaboration with Zonta International, where a total of 600 kits were delivered to women in Malaui. This event was run with over $1000 raised from fundraising events including a bake sale and trivia night, as well as SCAP grant support from QUT. Another milestone in 2014 for QUT GEMS was the DIIAD Campaign where 81 people (setting the record for the largest team ever) from across faculties signed up to wear a school dress to support girls’ education. A total of $16,720.00 was raised, enabling QUT GEMS to collectively send 55 girls in Sierra Leone to school.
GEMS allows people to become part of a community who value equal opportunity, and support the wellbeing of women everywhere. We are fortunate to be part of an accommodating community that fosters opportunities to develop, connect and inspire women in a changing world.
In 2015, we are, once again, in great anticipation to launch our charity endeavours to support and make a difference for the aforementioned organisations, which primarily aim to support and empower women. We look forward to meeting and helping you get involved in GEMS’ charity endeavours in 2015!
